Submit your Local Authority Guidance Here

Many local authorities produce their own guidance on a wide range of topics and English Heritage is keen to encourage sharing of knowledge and experience.

In 2004, English Heritage commissioned Oxford Brookes University to collate a database of local authority publications on the historic environment. An initial telephone pilot survey was followed by a comprehensive questionnaire survey. This information is now available on the HELM website, along with a summary report.

Currently Local Authority guidance is displayed as a searchable bibliography, with links to the authority website for contacts and to download guidance. We would like your opinion on this and if you believe it would be useful to download LA Guidance directly from the HELM website as well. Email us with your comments and suggestions.

To add your guidance to the HELM website. Please download and submit the LA Guidance HELM Questionnaire. We continually update this database.

What's New?

  • Britain was the world’s first industrial nation and has a wealth of industrial heritage but many industrial sites have been lost or are at risk due to functional redundancy. English Heritage's survey has shown that the percentage of listed industrial buildings at risk is three times greater than the national average for listed buildings at risk.
  • The value of a well managed, protected and appreciated historic environment to both our quality of life and to the economy is well established. Heritage tourism contributes £20.6 billion to GDP a year whilst research shows that 93% of people think that in improving their local place it is important to save heritage assets.
