English Heritage Grants

English Heritage has a number of grant schemes designed to help with the protection and promotion of the Historic Environment. These are listed below.

Local Authorities - Area Partnership Funding
English Heritage is currently looking at how best deliver support to Local Planning Authorities for area partnerships. This review is being conducted with our partners and stakeholders within the sector and we hope to be able to publish how we move forward in the near future.

Local Authority Grants to Underwrite Urgent Works Notices
This grant scheme is designed to encourage and support local authorities in the use of their statutory powers to ensure that work urgently necessary for the preservation of a vacant or partly occupied listed building is undertaken.

Acquisition Grants for Local Authorities
This grant scheme focuses on help to local authorities to underwrite the cost of serving a Repairs Notice under sections 47, 48 and 52 of the Planning (Listed Buildings and Conservation Areas) Act 1990 on historic buildings which have fallen into a serious and dangerous state of decay.

Local Authority Grants for Conservation Staff
English Heritage can consider help to establish permanent specialist conservation posts in local planning authorities currently lacking them, or where provision is greatly inadequate in relation to heritage responsibilities.

Repair Grants for Places of Worship
This scheme is jointly funded by English Heritage and the Heritage Lottery Fund and gives grants for urgent repairs to listed buildings which are in regular use as public places of worship.

Cathedral Repairs
This scheme provides funding to Church of England and Roman Catholic cathedrals which are listed grade I or II* and / or are situated within a conservation area.

Historic Buildings, Monuments & Designed Landscapes
This scheme covers grants for the repair and conservation of some of England’s most significant historic buildings, monuments and designed landscapes. Grants are primarily offered for urgent repairs or other work required within two years to prevent loss or damage to important architectural, archaeological or landscape features.

War Memorials
English Heritage and the Wolfson Foundation, in association with the War Memorials Trust, are providing grants for the repair and conservation of free-standing war memorials in England. These grants are intended to help those who are responsible for the upkeep of war memorials.

Capacity Building for the Voluntary Sector
The programme provides funding to national and local voluntary organisations for projects which promote the conservation, understanding and enjoyment of the historic environment.

Historic Environment Enabling Programme
The Historic Environment Enabling Programme is the national strategic budget through which English Heritage commissions the research needed for evidence-based policy and funds nationally-important initiatives which underpin its lead role for the Historic Environment in England.

Aggregates Levy Sustainability Fund
The Aggregates Levy Sustainability Fund (ALSF) was introduced by Government in April 2002 to provide funding to tackle the environmental impacts of aggregates extraction. English Heritage distributes funding of behalf of the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra) for projects which aim to reduce the impact of aggregates extraction upon the Historic Environment.

Further information and application packs are avaliable on the English Heritage website under Grants.
